NONG KHAI

This province edges the Mekong River, facing Laos, and covers 7,552 square kilometers. The provincial capital is 615 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, and located diagonally opposite the Laotian capital of Vientiane on the bank of the Mekong River. Nong Khai is the major gateway to Laos and the site of the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge are spanning the Mekong. Wat Pho Chai contains the province's major Buddha image and is site of the annual Bang Fai Rocket Festival each April. The scenic Nong Khai-Si Chiang Mai route largely parallels the Mekong and passes the Than Thong and Than Thip waterfalls.
