YALA

This land-locked southern province borders Malaysia and occupies an area of 4,521 square kilometers. The provincial capital is 1,084 kilometers south of Bangkok, and the province, largely comprising forested mountains, has a nine-month rains season each year. Major tourism attractions include Wat Khuha Phimuk which has a large cave housing a reclining Buddha image built in the Sri Vichaya style around 758, the scenic Banglam Dam, the Sukthalai Waterfall, the Nam Tok Than To Forest Park and Betong, a border town which is believed to have the world's second largest letterbox. Betong district is well known among Thais for its temperate flowers, Chinese food and herbs, and is easily accessible by mountain road from Yala and by road from the Malaysian town of Klok in Kedah state.
