Officially known as Muang Khanthabuli
or Muang Savan, this growing district just across the Mekong River from
Mukdahan, Thailand, has become a major relay point for trade between
Thailand and Vietnam. Savannakhet is the most populated province of
Laos. There are many surrounding villages of notable interest and beauty.
The Vietnamese presence in Savan
grew during the French era and while it shrank during the Indochina
war. Like Vientiane and Luang Prabang, Savannakhet has a number of French
colonial and Franco-Chinese buildings in the small business district.
The interesting places to visit are: That Ing Hang and That Phones stupa
that, during the full moon of 1st, 3rd, month, respectively holds the
special festival, Talat Savan Xai, the market runs all day and is visited
by a fascinating variety of people. On the Mekong River 60 kms south
of Savannakhet, the Khmer ruin of a stone House (Heuan-Hin) built between
AD553 and 700. The pagoda Wat Sayaphoum is known for its Pali school.
It is also the place where skeletons of dinosaur are displayed.
