Lashio is in a mountain basin at 855 m - This area is prone to rain at any time of the year. This small town just opens their door to the foreigner in 1992. You're not likely to be allowed beyond the military checkpoints at the northeastern edge of town without special permission. There are a number of interesting places to see, such as Sasana, 2500 years old that was built by the last Shan sawbwa. New Pyi Lon Chantha Paya sits on Mya Kantha Hill in the northern part of town and offers good views of the city. More interesting than any of the Buddhist shrines in town is the large and busy Quan Yin San Temple in Lashio Lay. Built around 40 years ago, it's the main Chinese temple in Myanmar. The exotic and colorful central market has just about everything.
