Bago: Only two hours drive from Yangon, founded in 573 AD by Thamala and Wimala, two Mon brothers of noble birth. It was as an outpost of the Mon Thaton Kingdom. The site, which was then on the Gulf of Martaban, had already been earmarked as the location of a great city by Gautama, the Buddha. Sightseeing here includes inspiring temples, lively local markets, cheroot making and woodcarving center.
Kyaikhtiyo: or "Golden Rock" is located southeast of Yangon. Golden Rock Pagoda is one of the most famous and treasured landmarks of Myanmar. An enormous gold leaf covered rock is poised precariously at the edge of a steep cliff. A hair of Buddha is said to be enshrined in the pagoda on top of the rock.
